MYERS-BRIGG TYPE INDICATOR® (MBTI): This instrument assesses your preference for Extroversion (E) vs. Introversion (I), Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N), Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F), and Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P) to come up with a four letter type description of your personality. Based on over six decades of research and studies on the MBTI, there is much that one can understand about their personality type and their ability to accept and work with the differences of others.

THE AUTHORS: The MBTI instrument was develop by Katharine Cook Briggs (1875-1968) and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers (1897-1980), to help everyday people solve everyday problems. The MBTI was first published in 1943 and became an internationally accepted instrument in 1956.

THE THEORY: The MBTI is based on the work of Swiss psychologist Carl G. Jung, who presented his psychological type theory in his book Psychological Types (published 1921, translated into English 1923).

WORLDWIDE USE: The MBTI is the most widely used personality type indicator used in the world today with an average of 2 million people taking the MBTI in the US alone per year. The MBTI is used in 70+ countries and has been translated into 70 different languages. Most Fortune 100 companies uses the MBTI for annually team-building workshops.

MBTI MECHANICS: The MBTI simply gives an indication of one’s personality type by asking preference questions that deal with:

Extroversion (E) vs. Introversion (I)
Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N)
Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)
Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P)

Your four letter “Whole Type” indication of your personality. Regardless if our preference is slight or very clear for one of eight preferences, we tend to make decisions that align with that preference and thus our whole “four letter” type.

USES & APPELLATIONS: By understanding our innate personality type, we better understand our natural gifts as well as what might be awkward for us to deal with. Thus, by knowing our type, we can now align ourselves with opportunities that fit our personality type and how to work with and respect others and their personality type gifts.
